Short April Recap

May 9, 2016 § Leave a comment

End of April was busy. We had a houseguest from home for three weeks…

Finn Visit

…and, correspondingly, a lot of laundry. One day I ran out of drying rack space. Since it was sunny, I hung the two pairs of still-damp wool socks on the curtain rail to finish drying:

Well, why not! 🙂

Apart from visits to area attractions, there was also out-of-state training, movies and eating out. We also played board and card games. And Mr. E got fantastic non-job-related news, plus a promising job-related lead. Life is good in that sense.

The weather has been surprisingly uneven, though. We had cool, even cold days for April (see the wool socks above!). Then the temps swung in the other direction and it was marvelously warm and sunny. Flowers have been out for weeks already, but the grass took time coming. Here are a few clumps of dandelions on a dry patch of the lawn.

Dandelions Dry Patch Mashup

I’ve never been terribly fond of dandelions, but this spring they were very welcome – that dry patch has been looking so desolate. Plenty of rain showers at the end of April and early May did the trick, though; it’s much greener now. (But it’s colder again, brr. This past weekend we were 10 degrees F / about 6 degrees C below average for early May.)

How was your April?

Colors in the Kitchen

A few lovely kitchen pics for a sunny spring day!

Painted kitchen drawers make for a lovely surprise glimpse of yellow:

I’m not a friend of subway tile, but in the picture below they’re tolerable (but still not handsome enough to tempt me):

That yellow toekick on the other hand – very nice idea! Photo by Derek Swalwell; found via design*sponge.

Last but not least, blue kitchen cabinets!

I’m taking the rest of the month off, blogwise. Happy April!

Quick Project: No-Sew Sheer Curtain for Back Door

June 8, 2015 § Leave a comment

Our back door has a huge window on it. Since the door faces south west, the nook it opens to gets unbearably hot in the summer. For a long time, we’ve wanted a sheer curtain there to block the sun. I finally got one made. Here’s the back door before:

I used scraps of the same sheer fabric we used elsewhere in the house, round elastic, eye screws and small nails. Voila!

Back Door After

Much better. 🙂

Floral Dinnerware

Right now I’m kinda wishing we were in need of more dinnerware. I really like this cheerful, spring-color set:

Putting Your Stairs to Work

As so many others, we place stuff that’s on its way up on the stairs to wait until we actually are going up. The other day, I was struck how pretty a pile of stuff can be:

Books and a beautiful Thank You note can make pretty much anything look worthy of a photo, wouldn’t you say? 🙂

Christmas Pretties Around the Internet

This (long!) post is for some of my favorites for the holiday season 2014.

Lovely red sitting room with a tree, candles and hanging stars by Susanna at Susannan työhuone:

These glass bead pendants by Amanda at House Revivals were meant as necklaces, but why not use them as tree ornaments instead:

Truly gigantic wall stars with a modern twist by Victoria at A Subtle Revelry:

I really appreciate the combination of non-traditional but coordinating colors. Victoria’s choice of graphic wrapping paper to cover her stars is inspiring!

Plum & Bow Wooden floral painted mirror from Urban Outfitters:

Reminds me so much of traditional Scandinavian painted furniture!

And speaking of Scandinavian… Räven raskar över isen! (Yes, there is an actual Swedish Christmas song involving foxes.) Fox ornaments from Ikea:

And lest it not be forgotten that monochromatic can also be beautiful: smaller star ornaments in white & gold plus white hyacinths in a white room by Ann Helen, found via Norske interiørblogger:

I’m not that keen on glitter, but the proportions of this little felt bow on the gift are perfect:

Finally, what a steady hand these gingerbread cookie decorations must take!

Sleepy Fox Rug

I’ve never had a thing for foxes, but this Silent Fox rug from Anthropologie is quite cute.

I like the combination of colors and their proportions. Even purple, which never has been a favorite of mine, looks nice in this mix. 🙂
